Preparation is often the key to success, so how can you best prepare your toddler for trying skiing this winter..

Get them used to equipment and clothing as early as possible at home.

Familiarize them with snow by playing in it, sledging, and building with it.

Show them books and videos of people skiing.

Take them to the side of the ski piste to see others skiing.

Talk about skiing as if it’s the most magical thing in the world.

Let them see Mummy and Daddy, big brothers and sisters skiing/on skis happy and smiling.

Do as many other sports with them too, such as cycling with them in a baby bike seat, using a balance bike, a scooter, swimming, baby gymnastics, roller skating and ice skating.

Play with ski related toys.

I can go on and on, you just need to remember that preparation can start now in October and even before.

Plastic skis give a toddler time to practice stepping their skis in their normal snow boots before they are set into the big heavy boots and skis.

🎿 The smallest plastic skis available are 60cm and the smallest real skis are 67cm

🎿 The smallest ski boots are mondo 14.5, but you will often find that this is just a 14.5 shell put into a 15 or 16 boots. Fischer ski offer a 15.5 boot (FISCHER ONE) with a moveable toe piece to make the boot as small as you would like, plus they are 20% lighter than another other toddler ski boots.

Ski time is play time and it can start at home before you even get to the snow and then continue at home.

This way when they put their skis on on the snow for the first time then they are feeling a confident sense of..
‘Yes I know this’
‘I know that this is fun’
‘I’ve done this before’
‘I know how to walk in the skis already’
‘I’m ok with wearing goggles, helmet and gloves’
‘Mummy and Daddy smile at me when I do this’

We use plastic skis around the house as they are lighter, easier to walk in and make less noise. I have used plastic skis for each of my babies for their very first introduction to skis on snow. But very quickly moved to the real skis and boots to start enjoying the feeling of sliding.

The skills that can be learnt in plastic skis are
- Stepping
- Keeping skis apart
- Uncrossing skis when they get crossed over
- Changing direction while stepping in skis
- Jumping on the sofa
- Sliding on the carpet
- Moving around objects

And one more really important thing to remember when ever they are sliding whether it’s on the carpet or on snow you must go weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! 😂

The ski season starts now for toddlers at home!

I’m here to help you all prepare your little skiers, I will be sharing lots leading up to this winter and doing a toddler ski book giveaway to kick it all off.

I’ve tried so many different types of plastic skis with my 4 children and I’ve found these 60cm ones from @decathlon to be the smallest and the best so far. But any 60cm and plastic skis are going give them a head start.

@littleskiers also do some plastic skis at 70cm and you can use code TORISKI2024 for 10% off them.

Both my boys first learnt to ride on balance bikes and then moved onto pedal bikes with the WOOM2 and then progressed to the WOOM3.

Link turns 6 soon and wanted a big boy bike with gears and the WOOM4 OFF AIR was clearly the next step up.

Last ski of the season reel is a bit late as we we

Last ski of the season reel is a bit late as we went home, packed our skis away for the summer and packed the car up to move house 1000km across France.

You can ski in Tignes and Val-d’Isère right up until the 5th May and although some lower pistes are closed for no snow and it can be a bit slushy especially after mid day, there’s always nice places to play up high and we get the resort to ourselves.

Kids chose to go to Le Village Perdu for their last ski treat and now we are living at the beach and dreaming about next winters ski adventures starting in November.

What do you do in the summer? Probably my most ask

What do you do in the summer? Probably my most asked question of all time, being a ski teacher.

☀️ In the summer we live by the beach in south/west France and I love to surf, mountain bike in the forests, skateboard, stand up paddle board and swim as a family.

Professionally my focus stays on my TORI.SKI business. This summer I will be recording some podcasts that will be aired next winter, preparing for a short documentary, writing content to share with you all ready for the start of next winter, preparing my diary with previous skiers and a few new ones too and a few more top secret exciting projects.

If you’re interested in booking for next winter, please message me after the start of June. I take bookings from my regular skiers first and I normally know by the end of the summer where (if any) gaps will be for new families.

🤯 Mind blown when he first showed me, but when he slowed it down it clicked and I was like yes, I can do that!

Love having a grown up son who teaches me things now, one of the advantages of being a very young Mum is that he grew up to be my ski play mate.

Honestly one of my most favourite things that I’ve ever done in my life is skiing with my children.

With skiing with my own 4 children and 100s of other families children too, I have learnt lots of tricks, tips and have many different types of equipment, aids and devices. BUT my absolute number one piece of advice is be happy, present and have fun.
